Rolex & the US Open

The US Open is the final Grand Slam® tournament of the tennis season. As a privileged partner of the sport worldwide for almost 50 years, Rolex has been the event’s Official Timekeeper since 2018.

Published on August 19, 2024

Inaugurated in 1881, this tournament has been played on the hard surface at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in Flushing Meadows, New York, since 1978. Among its 17 competition courts is the showpiece arena, Arthur Ashe Stadium, with a seating capacity close to 23,800, the largest in the sport worldwide.

A fusion of energy

The US Open is known for its electric ambience, a reflection of New York itself, “the city that never sleeps”. At this vibrant, dynamic event, the action also unfolds in the stands, where spectators are not afraid to give voice to their excitement. During matches, the energy emanating from the fans, the court and the city converge to galvanize the players.

Rolex Testimonees and the US Open

Amid this electric atmosphere, matches at this Grand Slam® tournament have become the stuff of legend. The five consecutive titles Roger Federer won from 2004 to 2008 are etched in memory.

Among its other tennis Testimonees, Rolex counts a host of fellow US Open winners, namely: Rod Laver, Chris Evert, Stefan Edberg, Pat Rafter, Justine Henin, Juan Martín del Potro, Angelique Kerber, Sloane Stephens, Bianca Andreescu and Dominic Thiem. In 2022, Iga Świątek and Carlos Alcaraz added their names to this impressive list, with Coco Gauff following suit the next year.

They all embody technical precision and the quest to become a better version of oneself.

The tournament of trailblazers

The US Open is fertile ground for innovation in tennis. From introducing the tiebreak and scheduling games at night, to implementing Hawk-Eye Live – a digital refereeing system that makes line calls immediately – every effort is made to ensure the tournament remains as compelling as ever.

Rolex and tennis: partners for almost 50 years

Since Rolex first partnered with The Championships, Wimbledon, in 1978, the brand has enjoyed a privileged relationship with tennis, one founded on a shared philosophy: the perpetual quest for excellence, a passion for precision and innovation, the elegance of movement, unwavering effort, a respect for tradition and the drive to always push beyond personal limits.

Over the years, Rolex has extended its involvement in the sport, becoming the Premium Partner of world tennis in both the men’s and women’s game.

The brand supports most of the major competitions, including the four Grand Slam® tournaments, the season-ending ATP and WTA Finals, all of the high-status ATP Masters 1000 tournaments and nine of the WTA 1000 events, as well as the premier international team contests, the Davis Cup Finals and the Laver Cup.

Rolex & The Open: golf’s oldest major

Traditionally contested in the United Kingdom during the third week of July, The Open is the fourth and final men’s major of the year. Associated with this competition since 1981, Rolex is today a privileged partner of world golf.

Published on July 11, 2024

The partnership between Rolex and golf began in 1967 when Arnold Palmer became the sport’s first Testimonee. Since then, the brand has become Official Timekeeper and is a principal partner of many leading events and stakeholders in the game.

Inaugurated in 1860, The Open is played every year on a historic links course in the United Kingdom, including St Andrews.

Steeped in elegance and tradition

Tradition has it that The Open is always played on a links course; that is, one located by the sea, featuring sandy soil and few water hazards or trees. Unpredictable weather conditions mean the 156 players competing in the tournament each year need their fair share of fighting spirit, self-control and humility given the potential for heavy showers, strong wind gusts and even heatwave conditions.

Unforgettable moments

With its unique past, the wild beauty of the coastal courses where it is played and its knowledgeable fans, The Open enjoys a revered place in the history of world sport – from the duels of Bobby Jones and Walter Hagen in the 1920s to the battle between Tom Watson and Jack Nicklaus in 1977, or the tears of Tiger Woods upon winning his third trophy in 2006.

Rolex and golf: partners for more than half a century

Rolex enjoys a privileged relationship with golf, one founded on a shared respect for tradition, responsibility, technical precision, the elegance of movement, the perpetual quest for excellence and a commitment to future generations.

Today, the partnership between Rolex and golf extends to many areas of the sport: with governing bodies and world rankings, with the greatest names in international golf, and with the major tournaments and global circuits – both men’s and women’s, professional and amateur, at senior and junior levels.

Moreover, the brand has also championed the creation of: the Rolex Series, the finest tournaments on the DP World Tour; the Rolex Player of the Year award which recognizes the best woman golfer on the Ladies Professional Golf Association (LPGA) circuit; and the Rolex Junior Players of the Year awards, which honour players aged 18 or younger, boy and girl, who perform best in a given season. Undeniably, Rolex has become “the partner watch of world golf”.

Rolex Testimonees and The Open

Several members of the Rolex family of Testimonees belong to the illustrious list of players to have won The Open: Gary Player, Arnold Palmer, Jack Nicklaus, Tom Watson, Tiger Woods, Jordan Spieth, Francesco Molinari and Collin Morikawa.

Rolex and The Amundi Evian Championship

Rolex is Partner and Official Timekeeper of golf’s only Major to be staged in continental Europe. The Amundi Evian Championship is played every July at the Evian Resort Golf Club in Évian-les-Bains, France. This demanding course is nestled between the pristine shores of Lake Geneva and the snow-capped Alps. Created in 1994, this women’s tournament was elevated to Major status in 2013.

A Major event

Since its first edition 30 years ago, The Amundi Evian Championship has grown exponentially to become an unmissable date on the golfing calendar. It is the only Major tournament to be played in continental Europe. Over time, the event has become a meeting point for the greatest women golfers in the world, pitted against each other in memorable duels that are etched into the discipline’s glorious history. Rolex Testimonees have excelled at the tournament, with victories from Annika Sörenstam (2000, 2002), Suzann Pettersen (2013), Lydia Ko (2015), Anna Nordqvist (2017) and Brooke Henderson (2022).

At the top of their game

The Amundi Evian Championship is contested annually on The Champions Course at Évian-les-Bains. The layout, which was completely redesigned in the late 1980s by architect Cabell B. Robinson, presents a number of difficulties that severely test the golfers’ skills. Situated between lake and mountain, the course offers a breathtaking panorama, where the beauty of the surroundings is matched by the demanding nature of the course and the precision required for each shot. “Playing Evian” has become a common expression, such is the enormity of the challenge.

“Women’s golf has always been a second thought in a lot of companies’ minds but not in Rolex’s mind. They’ve been there from the beginning and supported the game at different levels.”

Annika Sörenstam

“Evian is really a very special place for me, and this goes beyond the fact that I won my first Major here at 17.”

Lydia Ko

Rolex, Partner of women’s golf

Partner and Official Timekeeper of The Amundi Evian Championship since 2000, Rolex is associated with all the women’s Majors – The Chevron Championship, the U.S. Women’s Open, the KPMG Women’s PGA Championship, the AIG Women’s Open – as well as the discipline’s main tours, namely the LPGA (Ladies Professional Golf Association) Tour and the LET (Ladies European Tour). The brand also partners the ANWA (Augusta National Women’s Amateur), the biggest tournament on the women’s amateur golf circuit. Through a series of awards, notably the Rolex Player of the Year, Rolex ANNIKA Major Award, Rolex Junior Player of the Year and Louise Suggs Rolex Rookie of the Year, the Swiss watchmaker promotes and celebrates the excellence of a women’s sport in perpetual evolution.

Rolex and golf, a foundation of shared values

Golf is more than a sport. It embodies values that make it an experience unlike any other. Precision, integrity, humility and respect. These are qualities also deeply rooted in Rolex’s identity. It is for this reason that, for almost 60 years, Rolex has supported golf. This long-standing commitment was initiated in 1967 with legendary champion Arnold Palmer, who was joined by Jack Nicklaus and Gary Player, known as The Big Three. It now extends to the leading institutions and events as well as the sport’s top players and younger talent.

Rolex and The Championships, Wimbledon

Rolex first partnered with The Championships, Wimbledon, in 1978. The world’s oldest tennis tournament is the temple of lawn tennis and of the original game. It is also where athletes become legends.

Rolex is the Official Timekeeper and one of the major partners of all the leading tournaments. The story began at The Championships, Wimbledon, in 1978 when the brand first became involved with a sport that was capturing the world’s attention like never before.

The All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club in south-west London has hosted The Championships since the inaugural edition in 1877. The world’s oldest tennis tournament, Wimbledon is the home of the sport and its grass court temple.

A temple of tennis tradition

Above the players’ entrance to Centre Court, which seats 15,000 spectators, lines from the poem If by Rudyard Kipling read:

If you can meet with
Triumph and Disaster
And treat those two
impostors just the same

These verses encapsulate the event’s philosophy because, at Wimbledon, the greatness of the sport lies not in victory but in the humility and perseverance of the champions.

The scene of major showdowns

The intensity of Wimbledon finals on Centre Court means they live on in the memory as extraordinary moments of tennis history. Epic battles between the likes of Rod Laver and John Newcombe, Björn Borg and John McEnroe, Chris Evert and Martina Navratilova, Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal have been written into the legend of Wimbledon and world tennis.

This unprecedented level of sporting excellence strikes a chord with an ethos intrinsic to Rolex and a natural partnership has developed at all the major tennis events.

Rolex and tennis: a partnership of almost 50 years

Rolex has enjoyed a special relationship with tennis that is deeply rooted in a common philosophy: the continuous pursuit of excellence, a desire for precision and innovation, the elegance of movement, unwavering effort, respect for tradition and a drive to always push beyond personal limits.

Over the years, Rolex has extended its involvement in the sport, becoming the Premium Partner of world tennis in both the men’s and women’s game.

The brand supports most of the major competitions, including all four Grand Slam® tournaments, the season-ending ATP and WTA Finals, the high-status ATP Masters and WTA 1000 tournaments, and the premier international team contests, the Davis Cup Finals and the Laver Cup.

Rolex Testimonees and Wimbledon

Among its Testimonees, Rolex counts a host of Wimbledon champions, including tennis legends Björn Borg and Chris Evert, as well as Stefan Edberg, Garbiñe Muguruza, Angelique Kerber, Roger Federer – who won the men’s singles crown a record eight times – and rising star Carlos Alcaraz.

Today’s leading lights, including Rolex family members Iga Świątek, Jannik Sinner and Coco Gauff, are aiming to join these greats on the list of winners at this revered tournament.

Rolex and sport

For many decades, the brand has actively championed culture, architecture, exploration and conservation of the planet. And in the sporting world, it has built a diverse range of partnerships across tennis, golf, equestrianism, skiing, sailing and motor sport. Rolex partners governing bodies, competitions and athletes – from established champions to promising talents – in long-standing engagements that perpetuate the future of these disciplines and promote excellence.

DIVE INTO COLOR: BREITLING’S SUPEROCEAN RAINBOW-DIAL ASSORTMENT MAKES ITS DEBUT ALONGSIDE THE NEW DEEP-WATER SUPEROCEAN AUTOMATIC 46 SUPER DIVER

June 17, 2024

With the Wheels and Waves surf-and-motorcycle festival in Biarritz setting the scene, Breitling
introduces two exciting additions to its Superocean line: the colorful rainbow-dial editions
and the robust Superocean Automatic 46 Super Diver model—new releases timed with
The Breitling Book of Surfing, a tribute to the shared passions and colorful stories of surfers
around the globe.

SPLASH OF STYLE: SUPEROCEAN RAINBOW- AND TURQUOISE-DIAL EDITIONS

Breitling’s relationship with the deep blue takes a chromatic twist with the introduction of the Superocean Automatic 42 and 36 rainbow-dial editions, alongside a new iteration of the bestselling 44 mm turquoise-dial version now with a tone-on-tone strap.

Georges Kern, Breitling CEO, captures the essence of these new offerings: “With the summer upon us, our colorful new Superocean models are your ultimate companions, whether you’re riding the waves or relaxing at a beachside dinner.”

These watches draw inspiration from the legendary SuperOcean Slow Motion of the 1960s and 1970s, which simplified the dive watch into its most essential elements. This simplification included a bold, high-contrast minute scale on the dial ring, chunky luminescent baton indexes and “paddle” hands for easy readability under the sea, and the innovative removal of the seconds hand, replaced by a minutes-based chronograph. This chronograph was nicknamed the “Slow Motion” because it took an hour to complete a full rotation. Today’s Superocean retains the spirit of this practicality while reintroducing the seconds hand and integrating modern features for contemporary wearers.

The collection once again stands out with the unique rainbow-dial models with hour markers and hands coated in a brilliant gradient of Super-LumiNova® hues—yellow, green, blue, indigo, violet, red, and orange—that not only add a playful pop of color during the day, but also glow in an array of shades in low light. These models are available in four vibrant 42 mm stainless-steel versions with rubber straps in turquoise, aquamarine, orange, and yellow, and a sophisticated 36 mm version inwhite combined with a stainless-steel and 18 k red gold case.

The 44 mm turquoise-dial model extends the colorful theme. Previously available on a black strap, it now sports a tone-on-tone turquoise rubber bracelet, providing a striking contrast with its black ceramic-inlayed bezel. The watches are built for action and leisure, with sporty rubber straps with micro-adjustment clasps, and polished, scratch-resistant ceramic bezel inserts.

DIVE DEEPER, DIVE SAFER: SUPEROCEAN AUTOMATIC 46 SUPER DIVER

Breitling’s latest innovation, the Superocean Automatic 46 Super Diver, is here to redefine your deep-sea adventures. Engineered to brave the depths, this powerhouse comes with a water resistance of up to 1000 meters and dial options in stealthy green or black camouflage, each paired with matching ceramic inlays that make a statement in and out of the water.

What sets this diver apart is its bidirectional rotating bezel with a patented safety lock. The clever feature ensures that every twist counts and stays put, guarding against unintended adjustments so you can focus on the wonders of the deep without worrying. Adding another layer of reliability, the Superocean Automatic 46 Super Diver includes a soft-iron inner case specially designed to shield the watch from magnetic interference. Whether it’s electronic gadgets or hidden currents, this watch keeps ticking precisely, letting nothing sway its course.

Crafted from feather-light titanium, the Superocean Automatic 46 Super Diver is available with either a color-matched rubber strap or a sleek titanium bracelet, blending top-tier functionality with nautical flair.

CELEBRATING SURF CULTURE: THE BREITLING BOOK OF SURFING

At Wheels and Waves, Breitling made a splash not only with the debut of its stunning Superocean models but also with its recently released The Breitling Book of Surfing. Since launching its first SuperOcean dive watch back in 1957, Breitling has cultivated a special connection with the surf community, one based on a sense of adventure and a shared love of the sea.

The Breitling Book of Surfing, a glossy page-turner published by Rizzoli, navigates through surf cultures across six continents—from the rugged, windswept coasts of Ireland to the legendary waves of Oahu, Hawaii. The book was penned by seasoned surf writer Ben Mondy and featuresa foreword by freestyler Mikey February and an introduction by eight-time world champion Stephanie Gilmore.

It captures the spirit of surf communities around the globe, as told by 16 of Breitling’s surf ambassadors, many of whom were on hand at the festival.
With its vivid new Superocean editions and the captivating Breitling Book of Surfing, the brand invites enthusiasts to experience the thrill of sea exploration, both in the water and through the pages that chronicle surfing’s spirited culture.

Founded in 1884, Breitling is a leading Swiss watchmaker. The innovative company invented the modern chronograph and pioneered the navigational tool watch. Today, it is still breaking new ground as a casual, inclusive, and sustainable luxury brand with more than 260 industrial loft-inspired retail locations around the world. CHRONOMAT GIANNIS ANTETOKOUNMPO: A SLAM-DUNK COLLABORATION BETWEEN BREITLING AND THE BASKETBALL SUPERSTAR

June 4, 2024

In an exhilarating partnership with NBA titan Giannis Antetokounmpo, Breitling scores a win on
two fronts: a limited-edition collaboration and new executions of the Chronomat B01 42 collection.

Joining forces with pro basketball’s Giannis Antetokounmpo, the Swiss luxury watchmaker introduces the co-designed Chronomat Giannis Antetokounmpo, a set of limited-edition timepieces embodying the athlete’s unstoppable energy and inspiring journey from the street courts of Athens to the towering heights of the NBA.

“Giannis has an incredible personal style and sense of self that we knew we had to capture in a timepiece,” says Georges Kern, CEO of Breitling. “And so, our longstanding ambassador became a collaborator who not only brought his aesthetic to the project, but also his indominable spirit.”

The Chronomat Giannis Antetokounmpo captures that spirit with designs as bold and impactful as the 6’11” Milwaukee Bucks power forward himself. His signature watches are available in two variations: a 40-mm steel Chronomat GMT and a 42-mm gold Chronomat B01 chronograph.

Antetokounmpo’s personality shines through in the details, from the “GA” initials on the central hand and the basketball emblem cleverly worked into the chronograph counter, to the dial shade reminiscent of the good-land green of his team, with whom his legendary status was cemented with a championship win. Both watches are limited editions—1750 for the GMT and 250 for the
chronograph.

Other noteworthy details include Antetokounmpo’s signature on the GMT caseback, while the chrono (available with a choice of green rubber Rouleaux strap or 18 k red gold bracelet) provides a view of the Breitling Manufacture Caliber 01 movement and its golden rotor. All pieces come in special-edition Giannis Antetokounmpo packaging along with a note from the “Greek Freak” himself.

“There’s a video of the moment I first unboxed the chronograph,” says Antetokounmpo. “My face says it all; I was blown away to see it come to life. I’m grateful to Breitling for the chance to co-design these watches and grateful to everyone who takes one home. My heart went into them.”

SPECIAL EDITION: THE ONE OF ONE

In a tribute fit for a king of the court, Breitling has created an exclusive “One of One” piece of the Chronomat B01 just for Antetokounmpo. This unique model features golden numerals in Arabic, a white inner bezel, and white contrasting chronograph counters against a green dial, colors that salute his team and celebrate his exceptional ascent from a stateless youth in Greece to an NBA icon—a story that was the subject of the 2022 film Rise and 2024 documentary The Marvelous Journey. And while you might only catch a glimpse of the custom piece courtside, you can find pictures in this release.

ELEVATING THE CLASSIC: CHRONOMAT B01 42

Alongside the launch of the Giannis Antetokounmpo signature editions, and a just-released pair of Chronomat B01 Triumph editions (discover that collaboration here), Breitling’s core Chronomat B01 42 lineup is also stepping up its game with a series of new executions.

Say hello to the Rouleaux-inspired rubber strap. A first for the Chronomat B01 range, the popular strap style provides wearability, water resistance, and a streamlined look. It’s the sporty alternative to the classic metal Rouleaux bracelet, which has also been enhanced with an ultra-comfortable butterfly folding clasp.

The Chronomat B01’s palette further expands with the introduction of a new green colorway, a verdant shade that brings to life the collection’s stainless steel, two-tone, and 18 k red gold variations.

And for those who love the featherlight wrist feel of titanium, Breitling is introducing a Chronomat B01 42 and Super Chronomat B01 44 in the lightweight metal that offers superior strength, enhancing the wearer’s experience without sacrificing the Chronomat’s hallmark robustness.

But rest assured, all the classic features that have defined the Chronomat remain firmly intact. The emblematic “onion” crown, a nod to the line’s aeronautical roots, offers an easy grip with a touch of vintage flair. The signature rider tabs still punctuate the bezel, allowing wearers to swap between the 15- and 45-minute markers for countdowns or count-ups.

Breitling’s Chronomat has always been a watch not just for the timekeepers but for the trailblazers. Born in an era of slender quartz models, it boldly defied trends with its impressive mechanical fortitude. The Chronomat got its start in 1983 as the official watch of the famed Italian aerial squadron Frecce Tricolori, before its widespread release a year later. That launch helped to re-establish the mechanical chronograph’s prominence in an era of quartz domination.

With the Chronomat Giannis Antetokounmpo editions and the redesigned Chronomat B01collection, Breitling once again scores points for watch enthusiasts everywhere, offering a fusion of new-school narrative with a legacy of precision and style.

The 24 hours of Le Mans

The 92nd edition of the 24 Hours of Le Mans, a race that celebrates endurance and motor sport excellence. takes places on 15 and 16 June 2024. Rolex has been the Official Timepiece of this legendary event since 2001.

Long and proud history of epic racing

Created in 1923, the 24 Hours of Le Mans is the oldest and one of the most prestigious car races in the world. A stern test of the reliability of the machines as well as the physical and mental stamina of the drivers, Le Mans attracts some of the greatest names in motor sport. On the 13.6-kilometre (8.4 miles) Circuit de la Sarthe in north-west France, some 62 cars, each with teams of three drivers, race against each other, divided into two Prototype and one GT Class. The winning team is the one which covers the greatest distance in 24 hours, some 5,300 kilometres (3,293 miles). Rolex has been the Official Timepiece of the race since 2001.

Continuous innovation over the decades

Since its inaugural edition, the mythical event has been an ideal testing ground for the many advances in motor sport technologies. The trialling of a new road surface in 1922 (still viable today), improvements to safety, engines and aerodynamics, as well as, since 2022, the requirement for all cars to run on 100 per cent renewable biofuel, are among the notable developments marking a century of progress supported by this legendary endurance race. New automotive manufacturers contesting the top class in 2024 include Alpine, BMW and Lamborghini, emphasizes the importance and relevance of the event for the car industry.

Tom Kristensen: ‘Mr Le Mans’

Tom Kristensen has well and truly earned his nickname. The most successful driver in the legendary race’s history, he won it a record nine times, starting with his debut in 1997. A Rolex Testimonee since 2010, the Danish racing driver was FIA World Endurance champion in 2013. “You carry a win at Le Mans with you forever. I feel proud and humble reflecting on the race’s legacy and Rolex’s involvement with motor sport. Together they are the perfect combination; both striving for excellence through persistence, technical innovation and human endeavour.”

The Cosmograph Daytona: a singular prize

The winners of the top class of the 24 Hours of Le Mans receive an Oyster Perpetual Cosmograph Daytona, specially engraved for the occasion. A legendary watch whose characteristic design has become iconic, the Cosmograph Daytona is emblematic of Rolex’s expertise. Equipped with a movement entirely designed and produced by the Rolex manufacture, it stands out by virtue of its chronometric precision as well as its unfailing reliability.

JACK HEUER’S VISION FOR TIMELESS LEGIBILITY TAG HEUER LAUNCHES THE TAG HEUER CARRERA CHRONOGRAPH A SYMBOL OF PRECISION AND ICONIC DESIGN EVOLUTION

MAY 27, 2024

Watches and Wonders, Geneva – April 9, 2024

After a year of avid celebration and powerful reveals, Swiss luxury watchmaker TAG Heuer continues its tribute to a rich heritage, pushing the boundaries of iconic design with the introduction of the latest TAG Heuer Carrera Chronograph. This exceptional timepiece blends historical reverence with cutting-edge design, propelling the renowned Carrera collection to new heights.

Over Six Decades of Excellence

Introduced in 1963, the TAG Heuer Carrera has defined the wristwatch chronograph genre for over six decades. Celebrated in 2023 for its 60th anniversary, this timepiece became a recognized symbol of classical elegant profile, ultra-legible dial, and precision engineering that has made it a must-have accessory for racing enthusiasts and watch aficionados worldwide.

Named after the legendary Carrera Panamericana Road race, Jack Heuer gave the unique and impactful appellation to his watch collection. The Carrera swiftly commended itself to the hearts and wrists of many through its precision that consistently pushed boundaries, allowing wearers to become just one with the watch.

The watch remained a pillar in the chronograph scene and continues to captivate with the introduction of new models every year, becoming a must-have accessory for collectors, racers, and fans.

The 7753 SN Heritage

Among Jack’s various designs, the 7753 SN from the late 1960s was the inspiration behind this 2024 release.

The first-generation Heuer Carrera model had a hand-wound Valjoux chronograph movement and either a silvered or black dial in a variety of configurations, sometimes with the addition of a scale around the dial periphery. At the end of the 1960s, a second series was added to the line-up with either a silvered dial and black subdials, or the other way around, known respectively as ‘panda’ and ‘reverse panda’.

The 7753 SN had a silvered dial with black subdials – a panda – as noted in its nomenclature: ‘SN’ meant ‘silver’ and ‘noir’, or silver and black, a mix of English and French that still feels curious today. As ever, this expression of Jack’s design was driven by legibility. The vision behind the Heuer Carrera had been to create a racing instrument from which lap times could be easily recorded, with no room for distraction and absolute legibility from the high-contrast dial.

Building on the success of the earliest Heuer Carreras, the 7753 SN further improved readability at a glance with clever design touches. They included stripes down the hour markers to give them extra clarity, hour and minute hands with stripes down the center for the same effect, double stops at 12 so it was clear when the chronograph was zeroed, and white hands and markings on the black counters to make them even more visible.

This registered chronograph was always admired for its clean and simple design, particularly among racers, a point further reinforced when in the 2019 movie Ford v Ferrari Matt Damon playing the legendary automotive design and constructor Carol Shelby would wear this exact reference.

Jack Heuer’s Legibility Vision

TAG Heuer is set to release a new take on a watch designed for legibility, a wink to the 7753 SN, the Carrera collection’s roots, and Jack Heuer’s dedication to readability. The TAG Heuer Carrera Chronograph brings forth a new and modern take on the 1963 vision, breathing new refining the design, refreshing the timeless allure of the panda chronograph look in the new Glassbox construction.

This timepiece embodies the spirit of legibility within the collection. The black azuré subdials at 3 and 9 o’clock contrast with the silver sunray-brushed dial, creating the signature bi-compax panda look. The addition of captivating, red-lacquered sub-dial hands further amplifies the contrast, ensuring clarity at a glance.

To further elevate legibility, the watch incorporates TAG Heuer’s iconic Glassbox design, set to become a staple of the TAG Heuer Carrera Chronograph line.

The 39mm steel case, topped with a sapphire crystal reminiscent of 1970s Heuer Carrera models, has been redeveloped for seamless flow over the tachymeter scale that runs around the dial edge and into the case. The curved flange, in contrasting black, and curved rhodium-plated indexes, contribute to the watch’s cohesive aesthetic, ensuring legibility from a wider range of angles, keeping with Jack’s original purpose for the watch.

In keeping with the core theme of legibility, the rhodium-plated central hand features a red-lacquered tip, catching the eye when reading the time. The seconds hand, in black, ensures a clear distinction. Notably, each 5-second interval is marked in red, enhancing visibility.

The allure of the Carrera Chronograph “Panda” extends to the steel bracelet, a first time on the redesigned Carrera collection, intertwining with the Glassbox design and highlighting the panda configuration. This harmonious blend of vintage tribute, contemporary elegance and novelty invites wearers to appreciate the craftsmanship and innovate spirit for which TAG Heuer is renowned.

Turning over the TAG Heuer Carrera Chronograph reveals the in-house chronograph movement Heuer 02 (Ref. TH20-00). This powerful movement features a bi-directional winding, a new shield-shaped rotor, and an impressive 80-hour power reserve. The watch comes with a 5-year extended warranty.

With this watch, TAG Heuer expands its collection, introducing a bi-compax panda look with a steel bracelet and a contrasting flange. The TAG Heuer Carrera Chronograph is now also available as a connected watch face, extending the legacy of legibility onto the beloved TAG Heuer Connected one – embodying Jack Heuer’s timeless vision into the digital realm.

This timepiece not only builds upon the Carrera’s rich heritage but also embodies the innovation and avant-garde spirit for which TAG Heuer is renowned.

Overseas tourbillon: An all-titanium technical watch

APRIL 12, 2024

Embargo lift on 9 April 2024, 8:30AM CET

  • A new version of the Overseas tourbillon model, entirely made of titanium with the collection’s emblematic blue dial.
  • A self-winding tourbillon model powered by ultra-thin Manufacture Calibre 2160.
  • Three interchangeable bracelet/straps delivered with the watch: titanium, calfskin leather, rubber.

Vacheron Constantin is expanding its range of titanium watches with an Overseas tourbillon model. Entirely made of titanium, from case to bracelet and from crown to bezel, this model graced with the collection’s emblematic blue dial is powered by ultra-thin self-winding Calibre 2160. Equipped with a tourbillon regulator visible at 6 o’clock through a dial opening, the movement features an 22K gold peripheral oscillating weight winding the calibre and ensuring a comfortable over three-day power reserve. With its extremely meticulous finishing of both the titanium case and the movement, this Overseas tourbillon is perfectly aligned with the spirit of this travel-dedicated collection. It comes with an integrated titanium bracelet (equipped with a titanium Grade 5 triple-blade folding clasp) that can be swapped out tool-free for two additional blue calfskin and rubber straps (delivered with a self-interchangeable titanium Grade 5 folding clasp).

Overseas and titanium: a perfect match
Titanium is a light yet robust metal whose hypoallergenic properties make it the ideal material for sports and technical watches. Born in 1996 and revisited eight years later, Vacheron Constantin’s Overseas collection embodies the same taste for discovery and pioneering spirit that has driven the brand to conquer new markets since the early 19th century. By incorporating titanium watches, the collection adopts a character entirely in tune with the sporty, technical and adventurous watch codes that have distinguished it since its launch. Presented by the Maison in 2022, the first timepiece with an all-titanium exterior was an Overseas tourbillon skeleton model which now appears in this new version, but with a solid dial graced with the blue shade emblematic of Overseas watches.
Given the rigidity of titanium, any metal finishing work on these timepieces requires rigorous discipline, care and attention to detail, bearing in mind that only grade 2 and grade 5 titanium are suitable for this type of operation. Special care has been lavished on the Overseas tourbillon to create a delicate vertical satin-brushed finish on the bracelet with its polished link angles as well as on the caseback, while the bezel features a circular satin-brushed finish on a sandblasted ring. Creating a striking contrast with the Maltese cross-like profile of the bezel, the matt effect adds to the model’s visual appeal. With its translucent blue-lacquered dial featuring a sunburst satin-brushed flange highlighting the double minutes track, this Overseas tourbillon is adorned with shimmering titanium and ready to face the contingencies of everyday life.

A finely crafted ultra-thin calibre
This resolutely adventurous watch is equally technical with its tourbillon majestically enthroned at 6 o’clock. Its mechanical ballet punctuated by the steady rotation of the regulator highlights the importance of horological complications in the world of Vacheron Constantin. Designed to compensate for the effects of the earth’s gravity on the movement’s isochronism, the tourbillon is a guarantee of precision and takes on its full meaning in a watch dedicated to travel. With that in mind, it also had to be perfectly ergonomically curved. At just over 10 mm thick, this Overseas tourbillon model fits snugly and lightly on the wrist, without sacrificing the robustness of titanium.

The elegance of this Overseas tourbillon is enhanced by ultra-thin self-winding Calibre 2160 that is a mere 5.65 mm thick. With its 22K gold peripheral oscillating weight arming the barrel for a comfortable 80-hour power reserve, the movement testifies to Vacheron Constantin’s technical mastery in the construction of ultra-thin complication movements.
This architecture without a central rotor also offers the advantage of providing a clear view of the entire movement and its meticulous finishing. With its circular-grained mainplate and hand-bevelled bridges adorned with a Côtes de Genève motif, its carefully hand-polished tourbillon bar, its finely grained wheels, not forgetting its chamfered and polished screws, the 188-parat Calibre 2160 offers a concrete vision of technical and precious High Watchmaking. Operating at a frequency of 2.5 Hz (18,000 vibrations per hour), it displays the hours and minutes as well as the small seconds on the Maltese cross-shaped tourbillon carriages by means of a blued fastening screw.

A versatile watch with interchangeable bracelet/straps
This model comes with an integrated titanium bracelet featuring a triple-blade folding clasp equipped with a comfort-adjustment system. The links securing the folding clasp can be stretched to provide up to 4 mm more room around the wrist. In order to adapt the style of the watch to its surroundings, the integrated titanium bracelet can be swapped out tool-free for two additional calfskin leather or blue rubber straps. These are equipped with a self-interchangeable titanium Grade 5 folding clasp, also interchangeable without any need for tools.

From Geometry to Artistry, Vacheron Constantin annual theme
A Vacheron Constantin watch is far more than merely the sum of its parts. Starting from a sketch, a geometrical drawing and its technical extensions, a whole world of shapes, colours and textures is born. The complex structures of mechanical engineering combine with design; meticulous detail gives life to grace; artisanal intelligence sparks emotions. Based on formal, mathematical study, Vacheron Constantin timepieces are thus endowed with a touch of soulfulness and elegance representing the ultimate expression of artistic talent. The classicism of the Traditionnelle collection; the minimalism of the Patrimony watches; the allure of Égérie; and the sporty-chic spirit of Overseas, all vividly illustrate this alchemy within which artistry is inspired by geometrical shapes, expressed through Vacheron Constantin’s 2024 theme.

Interview with Christian Selmoni, Style & Heritage Director

When did Vacheron Constantin introduce titanium to its collections?
Titanium – which is 30% more resistant than steel and only half its weight – is a metal whose properties are perfectly suited to Vacheron Constantin’s sports watch collection. The first proposal was for the Quai de l’Île collection in 2008, followed by Overseas timepieces in 2009. In those cases, it was used for the bezels of two self-winding models, one of which was equipped with a chronograph. The following year, the same bezel was adopted for a dual time model. The collaboration with photographer and mountaineer Cory Richards, a member of the ‘One of not Many’ talent circle, opened up new horizons. The two Overseas Everest limited series dedicated to him – a dual time and a chronograph – were designed to cope with the hostile environments of Cory Richards’ expeditions and exploration missions. The two 2021 models are distinguished by their titanium case, bezel, pushers and pusher rings. The aim was first and foremost to accentuate the sporty, hard-wearing aspect of these Overseas watches, with very convincing results.

Those were however limited editions and not yet watches in regular production?
These two models with their powerful design and steel case were produced in two 150-piece limited series. A prototype of the dual time version accompanied Cory Richards on one of his Everest expeditions in 2019. Vacheron Constantin’s designers took things a step further in 2022 by offering an all-titanium Overseas in the company’s catalogue. This was a tourbillon skeleton timepiece: a first in the collection that foreshadowed this year’s model, also made in titanium but with a solid dial that is openworked on the tourbillon only. Inside the case beats the same ultra-thin Calibre 2160 in a non-skeleton version. The two watches represent a very interesting alternative to the steel watches in the collection. They offer the properties of sporty timepieces through their lightness and robustness while remaining on a par with the technical timepieces for which Vacheron Constantin is renowned. What’s more, customers can now choose between a skeleton version and one with a blue dial.

Given that titanium is often a material of choice for sports watches, why choose a tourbillon movement rather than a chronograph, for example, for these first all-titanium models?!With the two Overseas Everest limited editions, the Maison has already offered models of this kind, which were very enthusiastically received. It was therefore time to explore other avenues and the choice fell on the ultra-thin self-winding tourbillon Calibre 2160. However, to ensure it stood out from the crowd, it was designed in a skeletonised version, a first in the Overseas collection that required a great deal of ingenuity to remove 20% of the calibre’s material. The result is a watch that is robust and very light thanks to the titanium, highly architectural thanks to its skeleton movement, yet extremely technical thanks to the presence of a tourbillon regulator, a guarantee of precision. In short, all the ingredients of a chic Overseas sports watch. In that respect, this year’s model is an extension of its predecessor, picking up its codes yet with a different aesthetic featuring the collection’s emblematic blue dial and with titanium as the common denominator.

On these four models, just as on all Overseas watches, the pink gold bracelet with folding clasp is easily adjustable. It can be replaced by a calfskin leather strap or a green rubber strap, each with an interchangeable pin buckle.

New dial color
By endowing the dials of four pink gold models with an intense green colour, the Maison has enhanced the adventurous vocation of the Overseas collection. This new hue breaks with the classic colour codes of Overseas watches: black, silver, pinkish beige and the emblematic blue. Combining the deep brilliance of pink gold with the intensity of green, these new timepieces bring a fresh aesthetic to Vacheron Constantin’s sporty-chic watches.
To accentuate the intensity of this new colour, meticulous care has been lavished on the finishing touches. Against a translucent lacquered backdrop playing on depth effects, the centre is graced with sunburst satin-brushing, while the flange is delicately velvet-finished. The legibility of the models is ensured by the contrast between the gold hour-markers and hands highlighted with Super-LumiNova® and the dark dial colour. Featuring a lighter-shaded double minutes track – or a single one on the gemset model – they enable accurate readings of the minutes and seconds. The finishes of the integrated rose gold bracelets with polished and vertical satin-brushed links evoking the shape of a Maltese cross, harmoniously match those of the dials, topped by a circular satin-finished bezel.

Chic yet sport
This new introduction of intense green dials covers different models in the Overseas collection. It includes four references: the 35 mm gemset, the 41 mm self-winding model with date display, the 42.5 mm chronograph and the 41 mm dual time iteration. In keeping with the collection’s sporting vocation, these new models with their open sapphire crystal casebacks are water-resistant to 150 metres thanks to a screw-down crown. A soft-iron casing ring provides anti-magnetic protection for the movements. These timepieces feature various calibres with High Watchmaking finishes, all self-winding with an 18K pink gold oscillating weight featuring the collection’s emblematic compass rose. Robust, sturdy and beating at a frequency of 4 Hz (28,800 vibrations per hour), they have a comfortable power reserve.

One watch, three faces
Overseas watches have made versatility one of their most practical and attractive features. Thanks to the interchangeability of its bracelet/straps, each model adopts a different style. The four new models come with an integrated pink gold bracelet featuring a triple-blade quick-release folding clasp. This system makes it possible to achieve an up to 4 mm larger wrist circumference by stretching the last one or even two links connected to the clasp of the rose gold bracelet. The bracelet can be swapped out tool-free for a calfskin or rubber strap. Featuring the same green colour as the dial, these two wristbands feature a pin buckle that is also interchangeable without tools.

Questions to Christian Selmoni, Style & Heritage Director

Why did you introduce this intense green colour into the Overseas collection?
The Overseas watches are a collection that lends itself admirably to new colour experiments. This was obvious when the brand introduced a pinkish-beige hue on certain ladies’ models, and more recently with a gold-toned dial. From there, it made sense to ask whether the men’s timepieces could also adopt colours other than white, black and the emblematic Overseas blue. The first tests largely confirmed what we suspected, particularly with the colour green, a shade already appearing on some of the watches in the Traditionnelle collection. We chose a deep green exuding hints of plants and forests. A sort of call to Nature that makes a perfect fit with the Overseas spirit of travel and exploration.

Steel Overseas watches were not chosen to adopt this new dial colour?
We initially opted for pink gold models. This intense green colour acts as a revealer, enhancing the brilliance of the gold while ensuring exceptional legibility of the watch’s functions. The complementary nature of these four references is truly striking when placed side by side and it could well be that this new colour will become as iconic as blue within the collection.

What about the versatility of Overseas watches?
Versatility is a hallmark of the collection and doubtless a much-appreciated quality of Vacheron Constantin’s sporty-chic models. These watches must be able to adapt to all circumstances of active life. Within this context, it is a question of ensuring impeccable functionality for models that must also blend elegantly into their environment, however diverse that may be. In this respect, tool-free bracelet/strap interchangeability plays a key role. Whether the wearer opts for an integrated bracelet with a folding clasp enabling length adjustment – also without tools for the first few millimetres – or for a leather or rubber strap, they can choose a style that is casual, classic or sporty. Each combination adds a personalised touch, making it a different model every time. Note that the likewise tool-free interchangeable pin buckle on the collection’s leather and rubber straps means one can now multiply the variations, particularly in terms of colours, by buying the straps alone without the fastening.
